Hey guys, thanks so much for all your comments! It's very nice to get feedback from builders whose work you respect!

Well I managed to get both boxes closed up.



Here is one with the back roped on with inner tubes.




And I'd been warned to be careful about the stress on the overhanging back. I noticed this break as I was taking pictures, but it was too late then. Luckily when I checked the next day, the break was right at the edge, so no problem even if I wasn't going to use binding. Sometimes you get lucky.








So, the extra is all routed off and sanded, and the neck mortise is open and ready.




Binding is bent and drying in the form. Rosewood for the ladder braced, and walnut for the x braced one.

And best news is, each has a nice clean, no buzz thump when tapped!
So all is looking good.

Wy to go, Joe. it won't be long now. You are doing a mighty fine job there.

Hey, just one quick tip that I use. After I have the back all fit but before gluing on, I put it on in place and trace around the sides onto the back. Then I take it to the bandsaw and trim off all the potential overhang just leaving the pencil line on. No overhang to worry about breaking or distorting and I rope the backs on with inner tube, just like you do.

You do great work...Raymond is right...you could not install binding and they would look great. But...I am a fan of nice binding that compliments the wood choices. So what are you going to bind with?
