Re: Another Bass Build

Thanks guys. I do use a finish on the fret board. It has four good coats of Formby's high gloss tung oil. I was able to get the pre's to play together and got everything wired up and ready for practice tomorrow night. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/RiverGambler/DSCN1581_zps0824a667.jpg Tedward

Re: Another Bass Build

I finished this build the other day! My plan for the electronics is to use two preamps, one for each pickup so that treble and bass can be controlled for each pickup. But, I'm having troubles getting the two pre's to play well with each other. I need to experiment some more. So, for now I have insta...

Re: Another Bass Build

It's been a while since I last posted. So, here's what I've gotten done so far. Testing the pickups I found out that the coils where shorting out to the magnets, even with three coats of lacquer and a coat of shellac. Had to cut the wire off all four coils, tape the magnets, and rewind. No shorts no...

Re: Another Bass Build

With the flat work cut and measurements made I drilled the slug holes, eyelet holes, and center mounting hole to mount to the winder. After eye ball drilling the holes and having everything out of line I made a jig. Now everything is consistent. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/RiverGambler/DSCN...

Re: Another Bass Build

Dennis, I hope I will be able to answer your questions. Pickup time!!! I got the 42 gauge wire, bobbin flat work, eyelets, covers, and 1/4" A5 slugs. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/RiverGambler/DSCN1255_zps60f5fd7f.jpg With the bobbins cut and measurements made I drilled the slug holes, e...

Re: Another Bass Build

Thanks Eben. The fret board is next. I cut the slots on a Stew Mac fret jig before I radius the board. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/RiverGambler/DSCN1329_zps4f912067.jpg In order to keep the fret board from sliding I use 1/2" brads dressed into the neck about 1/8" and cut off 1/16&...

Re: Another Bass Build

Thanks Dave. Time for the truss rod and carbon fiber. On this build I went with a dual action rod and carbon fiber Tow. The Tow is like a ribbon with carbon fiber strands that are a continual length. Where as the rods are short strands running parallel to each other. The Tow is supposed to be stiffe...

Re: Another Bass Build

Now it is ready to hog out the body. I use a 1 3/8" Forstner bit and a drill press for the main part and then a 1/2" straight bit in a router to clean things up. I did rember to measure the cutting depth of the tip of the Forstner bit so that when I routed with the 1/2" bit I could cl...
