I wondered about the grain orientation of the headplate and now that the slots are cut, I can see the result you were after. Nice detail.

Interesting, Joe. I can't imagine doing a better job myself with that added brace, but perhaps if you had landed it tight and parallel to the bridge plate, it might have helped a bit more.
