John's Mandolin

Post by whitespruce » Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:19 pm

Just a few pictures to show I am still functional. I am helping John Sumption build a mandolin for his Grand daughter (Henri's Sister). Have not done one of these before, so going slow and learning. We glued the rim together yesterday.

We have the neck sawn out and rough carved. The top will be thermally modified white spruce and everything else curly maple.

I will do more pics as we go.

Great start Grant. I've thought making an "F" style mandolin but haven't gotten past the thought process yet. If you don't mind putting as many pics and details as possible along the way I for one would appreciate it. Are you using a plan?

Good to see you posting Grant. Are you going off of specific plans? Love seeing the process.

Cool project! Looking forward to this unfolding. Hot pipe bent rims?

Thanks for the comments. Trying to follow the Roger Siminoff book. Bent the sides with a piece of 1 1/2 inch copper pipe and a propane torch. Curly maple is a bitch, especially the tight bend around the scroll.

Working slow, between some finish the kitchen cabinet projects.

Very cool indeed Grant!
And I take it this is going to be a carved top and back?

We do have the top glued to the rims, but I need to take some pictures.
