As to the 6 pins on a 12, on all my guitars I always slot the bridge and top so the string fits into the slot and use un-slotted pins or simply turn the pins so the slot isn't facing the string. So on 12's I cut two slots in the bridge and top to allow one pin to hold both strings. It also let's me adjust the string spacing and sure makes for a less cluttered bridge. When I'm stringing I usually put in one string, push the pin in to push the string into the slot, and then pull on the string to make sure the ball is seated well against the bridge plate. Then I do the next string, pull the pin and usually the first string stays in place so I can seat the second one. Works pretty well.......
